How does the AI agent look up orders in my Shopify store?

The agent uses Shopify's Orders API to search by customer email or order number. When a customer asks about an order, the agent queries Shopify in real-time and retrieves order details, line items, fulfillment status, and tracking information. No data is stored on our side. Everything is fetched live from your store.

Can the agent process refunds automatically, or does it need my approval?

You control this completely. Configure the agent to auto-approve refunds under a certain dollar amount, require manager approval for higher-value returns, or always route refund requests for manual review. The rules match your existing return policy.

What Shopify permissions does Tars require to function?

Tars requires read access to Orders, Customers, Products, and Fulfillments. If you enable refund processing, it also needs write access to Refunds. You authorize via an Admin API access token scoped to only these permissions. Revoke access anytime from your Shopify admin.

Does Tars store copies of my Shopify customer data?

No. Tars queries your Shopify store in real-time during each conversation. Customer emails, order details, and product information are fetched live and used only to respond within that session. We do not maintain a separate database of your Shopify records.

Can the agent handle questions about orders placed before the integration was set up?

Yes. The agent accesses your full Shopify order history through the API. Whether an order was placed yesterday or two years ago, if it exists in your Shopify admin, the agent retrieves it and provides status details to your customers.

How is this different from Shopify Inbox?

Shopify Inbox is a basic messaging tool. Tars AI Agents understand intent, look up live order data, process returns, and check inventory during the conversation. What happens if a customer provides an order number that does not exist?

The agent handles this gracefully. If no matching order is found, it asks the customer to double-check the email or order number, offers to search by alternative details, and can escalate to a human agent if needed. There are no dead-end conversations.

Can the agent check real-time inventory across multiple Shopify locations?
