Use Cases

Financial clarity through conversation

See how fintechs and financial institutions use MX data in AI conversations to give customers instant account visibility, spending insights, and budget tracking.

Instant Multi-Account Balance Check

A banking customer messages, 'What are my balances across all accounts?' Your AI Agent retrieves all linked accounts from MX, reads the available balance for each checking, savings, and credit account, and presents a consolidated financial snapshot. The customer sees their complete financial picture in one response instead of logging into three different banking apps.

Spending Analysis Without Spreadsheets

A user asks, 'Where did my money go last month?' Your AI Agent queries MX for the past 30 days of transactions, groups them by category using MX's enriched data including merchant names and classifications, and presents the top spending categories with amounts. The user gets a personal finance summary in seconds, no manual categorization needed.

Bank Connection Assistance for New Users

A new fintech customer asks, 'Can I connect my Chase and Fidelity accounts?' Your AI Agent searches MX's institution directory, confirms both are supported with the required products, retrieves the credential fields needed for connection, and generates a Connect Widget URL. The user links their accounts through a guided conversation instead of fumbling through settings.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the AI agent access financial data from multiple banks through MX?

MX aggregates data from tens of thousands of financial institutions. When a user connects their accounts, MX creates member connections that pull account, transaction, and balance data. The agent queries these through MX's REST API using user and member GUIDs, accessing the aggregated data without connecting to each bank directly.

Can the agent retrieve transactions from specific date ranges?

Yes. The List Transactions endpoint supports from_date and to_date filters as Unix timestamps. The agent can also filter by creation and update timestamps, enabling precise queries like 'show me transactions from last week' or 'what did I spend in January.' Transaction data includes merchant names, categories, and amounts.

What MX credentials does Tars need to connect?

Tars requires your Base64-encoded MX credentials, which combine your Client ID and API Key in the format base64(client_id:api_key). These are used in the Authorization header for API requests. You obtain these credentials from your MX Partner Dashboard and can rotate them as needed.

Does Tars store users' financial data from MX?

No. The agent queries MX's API in real time during conversations. Account balances, transaction details, and institutional data are fetched live and used only for the active interaction. Financial data remains secured within MX's platform and your infrastructure.

Can the agent handle MFA challenges when connecting to financial institutions?

Yes. The List Challenges endpoint retrieves MFA prompts when a member connection is in CHALLENGED state. The agent can present these challenges to the user during the conversation, collect their responses, and relay them back to complete the authentication flow with their financial institution.

How is this different from having users log into their individual bank apps?

Individual bank apps only show data from that one institution. MX aggregates accounts across all connected banks, credit cards, and investment platforms into a unified view. Your AI agent delivers this consolidated financial picture in a conversation, so users see all their finances in one place without switching between five different apps.

Does the agent support the FDX (Financial Data Exchange) standard?

Yes. MX's API includes FDX-compliant endpoints. The agent can read FDX account details, which follows the open banking standard for secure financial data sharing. This ensures compatibility with the industry's evolving data access requirements.

Can the agent generate MX Connect Widget URLs for account linking?

Yes. The agent retrieves configurable Connect Widget URLs through MX's API, which can be embedded in your app or shared with users for secure account connection. The widget handles the institutional login flow, MFA challenges, and account selection within MX's secure environment.
