Mailboxlayer performs up to six checks in a single API call: syntax format validation, SMTP mailbox verification, MX record lookup, disposable email detection, free provider identification, and catch-all domain detection. Each check can be toggled on or off through parameters.

Does the validation happen during the conversation or after?

During. When a visitor provides their email, the agent sends it to Mailboxlayer immediately. The API responds in milliseconds with validation results. If the email fails checks, the agent asks for a correction within the same conversation flow. No delays, no post-hoc cleanup.

Can I customize which validation checks the agent performs?

Yes. Mailboxlayer's API accepts parameters to enable or disable each check: format, smtp, mx, disposable, free, catch_all, and role. Configure the agent to run only the checks relevant to your use case, like skipping free provider detection for B2C scenarios.

What is a 'role-based' email address and should I block it?

Tars passes the email to Mailboxlayer for validation and receives the result. The email is used during the conversation to create leads or respond to the visitor. Tars does not maintain a separate database of validated addresses. Your data stays in your CRM or marketing platform.

How accurate is Mailboxlayer's SMTP verification?

SMTP verification pings the actual mail server to confirm the mailbox exists. It is highly accurate for most domains. However, some servers do not respond to verification pings or use catch-all configurations, which Mailboxlayer flags separately so you can make informed decisions.

What happens if the Mailboxlayer API is temporarily unavailable?
