Frequently Asked Questions

How does the AI agent select which DocuGenerate template to use?

The agent retrieves your full template list using DocuGenerate's Template Get or List endpoint. Based on what the customer needs, whether it is a contract, invoice, or certificate, the agent matches the request to the correct template ID and proceeds with document generation. You can also configure default templates for specific conversation flows.

Can the agent generate documents in formats other than PDF?

Yes. DocuGenerate supports multiple output formats including PDF, PDF/A, DOCX, DOC, ODT, and TXT. The agent specifies the desired output_format parameter when calling the generation endpoint. You can set a default format or let the customer choose during the conversation.

What data does the agent need from the customer to generate a document?

That depends on your template's merge tags. If your contract template has tags for customer_name, company, and address, the agent asks for exactly those fields. The agent maps the collected data to JSON and sends it to DocuGenerate. Only the fields defined in your template are required.

Does Tars store the generated PDF files?

Tars does not permanently store your generated documents. DocuGenerate returns a temporary download URL when a document is created. The agent delivers that URL to the customer during the conversation. Document storage and retention is managed on your DocuGenerate account according to your plan settings.

Can the agent attach extra files like terms and conditions to the generated PDF?

Yes. The agent uses DocuGenerate's Generate with Attachments endpoint, passing URLs or base64-encoded data of the files you want embedded. This bundles supporting documents directly into the generated PDF, so the customer receives everything in one file.

How does bulk document generation work through the AI agent?

The agent sends an array of data objects to DocuGenerate's Bulk ZIP endpoint. Each object represents one document. DocuGenerate processes the batch and returns a ZIP archive containing all generated files. This is useful for certificate batches, personalized letters, or mass invoice runs triggered from a single conversation.

What authentication does DocuGenerate require to connect with Tars?

DocuGenerate uses a simple API key for authentication. In your Tars dashboard, navigate to Tools, select DocuGenerate, and paste your API key from your DocuGenerate account settings. No OAuth flow or complex setup is needed. The connection is established immediately.

How is this different from generating documents manually in DocuGenerate's web app?

The web app requires someone to log in, select a template, paste data, and download the result. With Tars, the AI agent handles this entire workflow during a customer conversation. Data collection and document generation happen simultaneously, eliminating the back-and-forth between your team, the customer, and the DocuGenerate dashboard.
