How does the AI agent create DNS filtering rules in Control D?

The agent calls Control D's Custom Rules API endpoint. When someone requests a domain block or bypass, the agent collects the hostname and target profile, then submits the rule via the API. Rules take effect immediately since Control D applies them at the DNS resolver level. The agent can create rules in specific folders for organizational clarity.

Can the agent manage multiple Control D profiles for different teams?

Yes. The agent accesses all profiles under your Control D account via the List Profiles endpoint. It can retrieve, modify, or create profiles for different departments. If you use the organization feature with sub-orgs, the agent supports the X-Force-Org-Id header to manage child organizations too.

What Control D API token permissions does the Tars integration require?

You generate an API token from your Control D dashboard under API settings. The token provides access to all endpoints you want the agent to use, including profiles, devices, rules, and analytics. You can restrict the token to specific IPs for additional security. Tars never sees your Control D login credentials.

Does Tars store DNS query logs or analytics data from Control D?

No. Tars queries Control D's analytics endpoints in real-time during conversations. DNS logs, query counts, and blocked domain data are fetched live and used only to answer the current request. Tars does not maintain a copy of your network traffic data or DNS resolution history.

Can the agent schedule DNS policy changes for specific times?

Yes. Control D supports schedule objects within profiles, and the agent can create or modify schedules using the Schedules API. For example, you could ask the agent to block social media from 9 AM to 5 PM on weekdays. The agent creates the schedule with the correct timezone and recurrence pattern.

What happens if someone asks the agent to unblock a domain flagged as malware?

You control this through your agent's configuration. Set guardrails that prevent bypassing malware or phishing filters, require manager approval for security-sensitive changes, or allow unrestricted modifications. The agent respects whatever policy boundaries you define before executing any rule changes in Control D.

How is this different from managing policies directly in Control D's dashboard?

The dashboard requires IT staff to log in, navigate profiles, and apply changes manually. With Tars, employees request changes in natural language via chat, and the agent handles the API calls.
