Use Cases

Data-driven conversations at scale

See how organizations use AI agents powered by Census Bureau data to answer demographic questions, support market research, and inform decisions during live interactions.

Real-Time Market Research for Sales Teams

A prospect on your website asks about the population and median income for a specific metro area to evaluate market potential. Your AI Agent queries ACS 1-Year Estimates for that geography, retrieves current population and income variables, and presents a summary with key figures. The prospect gets instant market intelligence without waiting for your research team to compile a report.

Automated Demographic Profiling for Consultants

A consulting client messages asking for a county-level demographic breakdown including age distribution and education levels. Your AI Agent pulls ACS 5-Year Estimates with the relevant variables, formats the data into readable insights, and delivers it in the conversation. The client receives actionable data in seconds instead of days, and your consultants focus on analysis rather than data gathering.

Business Landscape Analysis for Site Selection

A retail chain executive wants to know how many food service establishments operate in three candidate counties. Your AI Agent queries County Business Patterns for each county using the relevant NAICS code, compares establishment counts and employment figures, and presents a side-by-side summary. The executive gets competitive landscape data mid-conversation, accelerating their site selection process.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

What Census Bureau datasets can the AI agent access?

The agent can query eight datasets: ACS 1-Year and 5-Year Estimates, the Annual Business Survey, Community Resilience Estimates, County Business Patterns, Decennial Census data, Population Estimates Program, and variable metadata. Each dataset covers different geographies and time periods, giving your agent broad statistical coverage.

How does the agent handle geography codes like FIPS and state codes?

The agent translates natural language geography references into the Census Bureau's required format. When a user asks about 'California,' the agent maps that to state code '06.' For county-level queries, it resolves county names to FIPS codes automatically, so users never need to know technical identifiers.

Do I need to pay for a Census Bureau API key?

No. The Census Bureau provides free API keys to anyone who registers at census.gov/developers. The key grants access to all public Census datasets. Tars simply uses your key to authenticate requests on behalf of your AI agent during conversations.

Can the agent pull data for small geographies like census tracts or ZIP codes?

Yes, but availability depends on the dataset. ACS 5-Year Estimates support census tracts, block groups, and ZIP Code Tabulation Areas. ACS 1-Year data is limited to geographies with populations above 65,000. The agent respects these boundaries and informs users when a requested geography is unavailable.

How current is the data the agent retrieves?

The agent pulls data directly from the Census Bureau's live API, so it reflects whatever the Bureau has published most recently. ACS 1-Year data typically lags by about one year. Population Estimates are updated annually. The agent always returns the most recent vintage available for the requested dataset.

Does Tars store or cache Census Bureau data after retrieval?

No. Census data is fetched in real time during each conversation and used only to generate the agent's response. Tars does not maintain a separate database of Census statistics. Every query returns fresh results from the Bureau's servers.

What happens if a user asks for a variable that does not exist in the requested dataset?

The agent uses the Variable Details endpoint to validate variables before querying. If a variable is not found, the agent explains the issue and suggests related variables or alternative datasets. Users are never left with a cryptic error message.

How is this different from using data.census.gov directly?

Data.census.gov requires users to navigate complex table selections, geography filters, and variable codes. Tars lets your customers or team members ask plain-language questions and get formatted answers instantly. The agent handles the API complexity behind the scenes, making Census data accessible to non-technical users.
