Use Cases

Document retrieval scenarios

See how businesses use AI agents to turn OneDrive into an instant document delivery system that works around the clock across every channel.

Instant Contract Delivery for Clients

A client messages asking for a copy of their signed agreement. Your AI Agent searches OneDrive by the client's name, finds the contract PDF in the client folder, generates a view-only sharing link with an expiration date, and sends it directly in the chat. The client has their document in seconds. Your team never had to open a file explorer.

Self-Service Employee Document Hub

A new hire asks for the company handbook and onboarding checklist via the internal AI assistant. Your agent searches OneDrive for those specific documents, confirms they are the latest versions by checking modification dates, and delivers download links for both. HR spends zero time fielding routine document requests.

Project File Status at a Glance

A project manager asks what files were updated this week in the Sprint 4 folder. Your AI Agent lists folder children from OneDrive, filters by last modified date, and provides a summary showing which team members edited which documents and when. The PM gets a clear activity snapshot without logging into SharePoint.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the AI agent find specific files in my OneDrive?

The agent uses Microsoft Graph's search API to query OneDrive by filename, content keywords, and metadata. When a customer asks for a document, the agent searches across your entire drive hierarchy, including SharePoint document libraries, and returns matching results with direct links. The search respects your existing OneDrive permissions.

Can the agent share files with external people who do not have a Microsoft account?

Yes. The agent can generate anonymous sharing links using OneDrive's Create Link API with the appropriate scope setting. You can configure whether the agent creates view-only or edit links, and set expiration dates on shared links to maintain security. Password-protected links are also supported for OneDrive Personal.

What Microsoft permissions does Tars require for the OneDrive integration?

Tars requests Files.ReadWrite.All and Sites.Read.All scopes via OAuth 2.0. This allows the agent to read and write files in your OneDrive and read SharePoint site data. You authorize through your Microsoft account and can revoke access anytime from your Microsoft account settings. Tars never sees your Microsoft password.

Does Tars store copies of my OneDrive files?

No. Tars queries your OneDrive in real-time during conversations using the Microsoft Graph API. File metadata, search results, and sharing links are fetched live. Tars does not download, cache, or maintain a separate copy of your documents. Your files remain exclusively in your OneDrive storage.

Can the agent access files in SharePoint document libraries through this integration?

Yes. The OneDrive integration uses Microsoft Graph, which provides unified access to OneDrive personal drives, OneDrive for Business, and SharePoint document libraries. The agent can search, list, share, and retrieve files from any of these locations using the same set of API endpoints.

How is this different from the built-in OneDrive search in Microsoft Teams?

Teams search requires your users to be inside the Teams app. Tars AI Agents work across your website, WhatsApp, SMS, and any channel where your customers or employees interact. The agent can also combine OneDrive actions with other tools, like looking up a customer in your CRM and then finding their specific contract in OneDrive, all in one conversation.

What happens if the agent cannot find the requested file?

The agent handles this gracefully. If no matching file is found, it asks the customer for more details such as the file name, project name, or approximate date. It can also list the contents of likely folders so the customer can identify the right document. If the file truly does not exist, the agent offers to connect them with a team member.

Can the agent upload files that customers send during a conversation?

Yes. Using the OneDrive Upload File endpoint, the agent can take files shared by customers or employees during a conversation and upload them to a specified OneDrive folder. This works for documents, images, and other file types, with automatic handling for large files through chunked upload sessions.
