IP2WHOIS

Domain ownership answers in seconds, not manual lookups

Who owns that domain? When does it expire? What domains share that server? Your AI agent pulls WHOIS records and hosted domain lists through IP2WHOIS, turning domain intelligence into instant conversational answers. Security teams, sales reps, and compliance officers get the data they need without leaving the chat.

Domain intelligence at conversation speed

Two powerful APIs that give your AI agent instant access to WHOIS registration data and hosted domain discovery across 1,221 TLDs and 634 ccTLDs.

Look Up Domain WHOIS

Someone mentions a domain name in conversation. Your AI agent queries IP2WHOIS and returns the registrar, creation date, expiration date, domain age, registrant contact details, and nameservers. Full domain intelligence delivered in seconds.

Discover Hosted Domains

Your agent accepts an IP address and retrieves every domain hosted on that server through IP2WHOIS. Paginated results reveal co-hosted sites, helping assess IP reputation and identify shared hosting relationships for security analysis.

Verify Domain Ownership

During partner onboarding or vendor verification, your agent pulls registrant name, organization, and email from WHOIS records. Cross-referencing this against the claimed owner completes verification without leaving the conversation.

Check Domain Expiry

Your agent retrieves the domain's expiration date and calculates the remaining days. Customers asking about domain renewals or partners with expiring domains get instant, accurate answers. Compliance teams can flag domains approaching expiry.

Identify Registrar Details

Need to know which registrar manages a domain? Your agent pulls registrar name, IANA ID, and URL from WHOIS records. Useful for transfer disputes, support escalation to the correct registrar, or understanding the domain's management chain.

Map Nameservers

Your agent extracts nameserver information from WHOIS records to identify which DNS provider hosts a domain. This helps troubleshoot DNS issues, verify hosting configurations, and understand domain infrastructure during technical conversations.

Use Cases

Domain research built into the workflow

From security investigations to partnership verification, see how AI agents use IP2WHOIS to answer domain ownership questions without manual research tools.

Phishing Domain Investigation

Your security team reports a suspicious domain mimicking your brand. Your AI Agent queries IP2WHOIS for the domain's WHOIS record and discovers it was registered just 3 days ago with privacy-protected registrant information. The agent then checks the hosting IP for other domains and finds 12 more recently registered lookalike domains. All findings are compiled into the conversation thread for your incident response team.

Vendor Domain Verification During Procurement

A vendor submits their company domain as part of an onboarding questionnaire. Your AI Agent runs the domain through IP2WHOIS, confirms the registrant organization matches the vendor's legal name, verifies the domain has been active for 8 years, and notes the nameservers point to a reputable hosting provider. The procurement team gets a verified domain report without any manual WHOIS lookups.

Competitive Hosting Analysis

Your product team wants to understand a competitor's infrastructure. Your AI Agent takes the competitor's IP address, calls IP2WHOIS's hosted domains API, and returns a list of all domains sharing that server. The team discovers the competitor hosts 15 microsites and 3 staging environments on the same IP. Infrastructure insights delivered through a simple conversation.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

How many TLDs does IP2WHOIS support for domain lookups?

IP2WHOIS supports queries for 1,221 top-level domains and 634 country-code TLDs. This covers virtually every active domain extension including .com, .org, .net, country codes like .co.uk and .de, and newer TLDs like .io and .app. Your agent can look up WHOIS data for any domain using a supported extension.

What registrant information does the WHOIS API return?

The API returns registrant name, organization, street address, city, state/region, ZIP code, country, phone number, fax number, and email address. Some domains use privacy protection services that mask this information. In those cases, the API returns the privacy provider's details instead of the actual registrant.

What authentication does Tars need for IP2WHOIS?

Tars requires your IP2WHOIS API key, generated from your IP2WHOIS or IP2Location.io account. Enter the key in the Tars Tools configuration. The free tier allows 500 WHOIS lookups per month. Paid plans increase the query limit.

Does Tars cache or store WHOIS data after a lookup?

No. Tars queries IP2WHOIS in real time during each conversation. WHOIS records, registrant details, and hosted domain lists are used only to answer the current question and are not retained in Tars. Fresh data is fetched for every new lookup request.

Can the agent find all domains hosted on a single IP address?

Yes. The Hosted Domains API accepts an IPv4 or IPv6 address and returns a paginated list of every domain name hosted on that IP. The agent can page through results to build a complete picture of the hosting environment, useful for security investigations and infrastructure mapping.

How does the agent handle domains with WHOIS privacy protection?

When a domain uses privacy protection, the WHOIS API returns the privacy provider's contact information instead of the actual owner. Your agent recognizes this pattern and can inform the user that the domain's real registrant is hidden behind a privacy service, suggesting alternative verification methods.

Can the WHOIS API return data in XML format instead of JSON?

Yes. Both the Domain WHOIS and Hosted Domains APIs support JSON (default) and XML response formats. Your agent can request either format, though JSON is recommended for faster parsing and smaller payloads within the conversation context.

How current is the WHOIS data returned by IP2WHOIS?

IP2WHOIS queries domain registries in real time or near-real time, so the data reflects the most current registration information available. Creation dates, expiration dates, and nameserver records are accurate as of the time of the query. However, registrant details may lag behind if the registry has not yet propagated recent changes.
