How many TLDs does IP2WHOIS support for domain lookups?

IP2WHOIS supports queries for 1,221 top-level domains and 634 country-code TLDs. This covers virtually every active domain extension including .com, .org, .net, country codes like .co.uk and .de, and newer TLDs like .io and .app. Your agent can look up WHOIS data for any domain using a supported extension.

What registrant information does the WHOIS API return?

The API returns registrant name, organization, street address, city, state/region, ZIP code, country, phone number, fax number, and email address. Some domains use privacy protection services that mask this information. In those cases, the API returns the privacy provider's details instead of the actual registrant.

What authentication does Tars need for IP2WHOIS?

Tars requires your IP2WHOIS API key, generated from your IP2WHOIS or IP2Location.io account. Enter the key in the Tars Tools configuration. The free tier allows 500 WHOIS lookups per month. Paid plans increase the query limit.

Does Tars cache or store WHOIS data after a lookup?

No. Tars queries IP2WHOIS in real time during each conversation. WHOIS records, registrant details, and hosted domain lists are used only to answer the current question and are not retained in Tars. Fresh data is fetched for every new lookup request.

Can the agent find all domains hosted on a single IP address?

Yes. The Hosted Domains API accepts an IPv4 or IPv6 address and returns a paginated list of every domain name hosted on that IP. The agent can page through results to build a complete picture of the hosting environment, useful for security investigations and infrastructure mapping.

How does the agent handle domains with WHOIS privacy protection?

When a domain uses privacy protection, the WHOIS API returns the privacy provider's contact information instead of the actual owner. Your agent recognizes this pattern and can inform the user that the domain's real registrant is hidden behind a privacy service, suggesting alternative verification methods.

Can the WHOIS API return data in XML format instead of JSON?

Yes. Both the Domain WHOIS and Hosted Domains APIs support JSON (default) and XML response formats. Your agent can request either format, though JSON is recommended for faster parsing and smaller payloads within the conversation context.

How current is the WHOIS data returned by IP2WHOIS?

IP2WHOIS queries domain registries in real time or near-real time, so the data reflects the most current registration information available. Creation dates, expiration dates, and nameserver records are accurate as of the time of the query. However, registrant details may lag behind if the registry has not yet propagated recent changes.
