How does the AI agent perform currency conversions using Fixer.io?

The agent calls Fixer.io's dedicated Convert endpoint, passing the source currency, target currency, and amount. Fixer.io returns the converted result along with the rate used. This is a single API call that handles the math server-side, so the agent delivers precise figures without rounding errors from manual calculation.

What is the difference between the Fixer and Fixer.io integrations in Tars?

The Fixer integration provides latest rates, historical rates, and a symbols list. Fixer.io adds three more endpoints: direct currency conversion, fluctuation data between date ranges, and time-series daily rates for up to 365 days. If your use case involves converting amounts or analyzing rate trends, Fixer.io is the more complete option.

Can the agent show how a currency pair moved over a specific date range?

Yes. The agent uses Fixer.io's Fluctuation endpoint. You specify a start date, end date, and optionally the currency pair. Fixer.io returns the opening rate, closing rate, absolute change, and percentage change for the period. This is especially useful for treasury reporting and financial planning conversations.

How many days of daily rate data can the Time Series endpoint return?

Fixer.io's Time Series endpoint supports a maximum span of 365 days per request. The agent can fetch daily closing rates for one or more currencies across that window. For longer historical analysis, the agent can make multiple requests covering consecutive date ranges and compile the results.

Does the free Fixer.io plan restrict which endpoints the agent can access?

The free plan supports the Latest Rates and Supported Symbols endpoints with EUR as the only base currency and up to 100 requests per month. Paid plans unlock the Convert, Fluctuation, Time Series, and Historical endpoints along with all 170 base currencies and higher request volumes.

Is my Fixer.io API key stored securely in Tars?

Yes. Your API key is encrypted at rest and transmitted over HTTPS. Tars never exposes the key in conversation logs or to end users. You can rotate the key in your Fixer.io dashboard at any time, and updating it in the Tars Tools settings takes effect immediately.

Can the agent handle historical conversions, like what $500 was worth in GBP last January?

Absolutely. The Convert endpoint accepts an optional date parameter. The agent passes the historical date along with the amount and currency pair, and Fixer.io returns the converted value using that day's exchange rate. Historical data is available back to January 1, 1999 for most currencies.

How often are Fixer.io exchange rates updated?

Update frequency depends on your Fixer.io plan. Free and basic plans refresh rates every 60 minutes. Professional plans update every 10 minutes. Enterprise plans deliver rates refreshed every 60 seconds. The agent always fetches the most current data available for your plan tier.
