Does DuckDuckGo Search require any API keys or credentials?

No. DuckDuckGo Search is a built-in tool in Tars that requires no API keys, OAuth, or account setup. Simply enable it in your agent configuration and it is ready to use. This makes it the fastest integration to deploy for giving your agent web search capabilities.

How does the agent decide when to search the web versus answer from training data?

Your AI agent is configured with a knowledge base and instructions. When a customer question falls outside that scope, the agent recognizes the gap and triggers a DuckDuckGo search automatically. You can also configure explicit triggers, for example, always searching for pricing, competitor, or regulatory questions.

Does the agent return raw search links or synthesized answers?

Both options are available. By default, the agent retrieves search results with titles, snippets, and URLs. With the summarization flag enabled, the agent processes those results into a coherent, conversational answer. You control whether customers see links, summaries, or a combination.

How many search results does the agent retrieve per query?

The default is 5 results per search, but you can configure this up to any number using the max_results parameter. For most customer conversations, 3 to 5 results provide enough context for the agent to synthesize a comprehensive answer without information overload.

Is customer search data private when using DuckDuckGo?

Yes. DuckDuckGo is built on privacy-first principles and does not track users or build search profiles. Search queries made through the Tars integration follow the same privacy standards. Neither DuckDuckGo nor Tars links search activity back to individual customers.

Can I scope the agent's searches to specific websites or domains?

Yes. The query_prefix parameter lets you prepend terms like 'site:docs.example.com' to every search. This scopes results to specific domains, such as your documentation site, a trusted industry resource, or official government portals. Great for ensuring the agent pulls from authoritative sources.

What happens if DuckDuckGo returns no relevant results?

If the search produces no useful results, the agent falls back to its training data or informs the customer that it could not find current information. It can then offer to connect the customer with a human agent or suggest refining their question. No dead ends in the conversation.
