A voice agent is an agent that talks to people on calls. It answers incoming calls, places outgoing calls, and takes calls that start on a website. A caller is an end user on a voice call. The voice agent listens, replies with a spoken voice, runs tools, searches knowledge bases, and hands the call to a person when the call needs one.

Who can use voice agents

Tars turns voice on per organization. To get voice for your organization, talk to the Tars sales team. What happens after Tars turns voice on depends on your plan: Voice runs in the United States data region only. Your role controls what you can see and change:
  • View chat agents, voice agents, knowledge bases & tools lets a member open voice agents.
  • Build chat agents, voice agents, knowledge bases & tools lets a member create and change them.
  • View conversations & calls gives access to call history, transcripts and recordings.
To take part in a live call, a member also needs a seat. A live-chat seat is the permission to reply to end users. Seats are separate from organization roles. A role controls what a member can see and manage across the organization, and only a seat grants replying in live chat. See Roles and permissions.

Where voice lives in the dashboard

When voice is off for your organization, Calls and Voice Agents do not appear in the sidebar.

Two kinds of voice agent

You choose the kind when you create the voice agent. A single prompt voice agent can become a conversation flow later with Convert to conversation flow. A conversion cannot go back.

How a voice agent reaches callers

Calls always run the latest published version of the voice agent. Drafts never take calls, except test calls you start yourself.
