# Voice agents

> What voice agents are, who can use them, and where calls, agents and phone numbers live in the dashboard.

> [!NOTE]
>
> This capability is in **beta**. Behavior can change before general availability.

A voice agent is an agent that talks to people on calls. It answers incoming calls, places outgoing calls, and takes calls that start on a website. A caller is an end user on a voice call. The voice agent listens, replies with a spoken voice, runs tools, searches knowledge bases, and hands the call to a person when the call needs one.

## Who can use voice agents

> [!NOTE]
>
> This capability needs the **Premium** plan or higher.

Tars turns voice on per organization. To get voice for your organization, talk to the Tars sales team.

What happens after Tars turns voice on depends on your plan:

| Plan | When calls can start |
| - | - |
| Premium | After you buy your first pack of voice minutes. The **Voice minutes** card shows **Buy your first pack to start calling** until then. |
| Enterprise | At once. |

Voice runs in the United States data region only.

Your role controls what you can see and change:

* **View chat agents, voice agents, knowledge bases & tools** lets a member open voice agents.
* **Build chat agents, voice agents, knowledge bases & tools** lets a member create and change them.
* **View conversations & calls** gives access to call history, transcripts and recordings.

To take part in a live call, a member also needs a seat.

A live-chat seat is the permission to reply to end users. Seats are separate from organization roles. A role controls what a member can see and manage across the organization, and only a seat grants replying in live chat.

See [Roles and permissions](https://hellotars.com/docs/guides/billing/roles-and-permissions.md).

## Where voice lives in the dashboard

| Place | What you do there |
| - | - |
| **Voice Agents** | Create, import, open and archive voice agents. The **Subflows** tab holds subflows that every voice agent in the organization can use. |
| **Calls** | Review past calls in **History** and follow calls in progress in **Live calls**. |
| **Settings** → **Phone numbers** | Buy, connect and manage the phone numbers that voice agents answer and call from. The **Do-not-call list** is here too. |
| **Settings** → **Billing** | See voice minutes, concurrent calls, phone number fees and voice budgets. |
| **Settings** → **Privacy** | Set the **Voice calls** rules that every voice agent in the organization follows. |

When voice is off for your organization, **Calls** and **Voice Agents** do not appear in the sidebar.

## Two kinds of voice agent

You choose the kind when you create the voice agent.

| Kind | What it is | Best for |
| - | - | - |
| **Single prompt** | One prompt that tells the voice agent what to do. You can split the prompt into conversation states, each with its own instructions and transitions. | Simple, open conversations. |
| **Conversation flow** | Flow nodes and transitions in a visual flow builder. Each flow node is one step of the call. | Structured tasks with clear steps. |

A single prompt voice agent can become a conversation flow later with **Convert to conversation flow**. A conversion cannot go back.

## How a voice agent reaches callers

| Channel | How callers reach the voice agent |
| - | - |
| Phone | A phone number connected to the voice agent answers incoming calls, places outgoing calls, or both. |
| Web | An end user starts a call from a **Call button** or **Call screen in your page** on your website, or from the voice agent's link. |
| API | Your backend places calls and reads results through the [Calls API](https://hellotars.com/docs/developer/api/calls.md). |

Calls always run the latest published version of the voice agent. Drafts never take calls, except test calls you start yourself.

## Pages of a voice agent

Each voice agent opens on these pages:

| Page | What it holds |
| - | - |
| **Agent** | The prompt or the flow, the voice and model, and every setting. Tests and publishing start here. |
| **Workflow** | Single prompt voice agents only. Shows the call from **Call started** to **Call ended**, with **Pre-call tools**, **Post-call tools** and **Post-call extraction**. |
| **Design** | How the web call screen and launcher look. |
| **Distribute** | Phone numbers, website embeds, the voice agent link and API details. |
| **Activity** | Calls handled by this voice agent. |
