# Create a knowledge base
> Create a knowledge base and add its first sources from a website import or uploaded files.

At the end of this page, you have a knowledge base with its first source imported and parsing. A knowledge base is an organization resource, so any agent in your organization can answer from it.
## Before you start
Before you start, sign in to the dashboard and select the organization you want to work in.
* Your role must allow resource management. The Viewer, Billing, and Auditor roles cannot create knowledge bases. See [Roles and permissions](/docs/guides/billing/roles-and-permissions).
## The Knowledge Bases page
**Knowledge** in the sidebar opens the **Knowledge Bases** page.

Each card shows the name, the description, and the document count, with **Importing** while new documents arrive. Hover over a card to open its **Actions** menu, with **Edit** and, for organization admins, **Delete**.
When no knowledge base exists yet, the page shows **Create your first knowledge base** with a **Create Knowledge Base** button.
## Create the knowledge base
Select the **Create knowledge base** tile to open the **Create knowledge base** dialog. It asks you to add a first source, from a website or from files.
The dialog has two tabs. **Import from website** is selected by default.
For a website, type the address into **Website URL**. For files, drop them into the upload area.
**Name (optional)** takes up to 64 characters. A **Suggested** chip offers a name when Tars can derive one.
On the upload tab, select **Create & add**. On the website tab, the button reads **Create & fetch up to {"{n}"} pages**.
The button shows **Creating…** with a spinner, then the new knowledge base page opens.
The submit button stays disabled until you enter a valid URL or include at least one file. **Cancel** in the footer dismisses the dialog. Closing the dialog resets every field.
### The Import from website tab
Type an address into **Website URL**. After you pause typing, Tars discovers the site and previews its pages in the right pane. Uncheck **Include all discovered pages** to pick pages yourself.
**Max pages**, **Max depth**, and the **Media search** switch sit below the name field. The collapsible **Advanced settings** section holds the other fetch settings and the **Re-fetch schedule** select. ### The Upload files tab
The **Upload files** tab accepts PDF, Markdown, text, and HTML files up to 50 MB each. An unsupported file shows the message **Unsupported file. Use PDF, Markdown, text, or HTML.**
Drop several files at once. Clear a row's checkbox to leave that file out, or select **Clear all** to start over. A file over 50 MB stays in the list with a **too large** badge and is not uploaded.
This capability needs the **{planNames[props_0.plan] ?? props_0.plan}** plan or higher.
The **Preserve and search PDF images** switch carries a **Premium** badge. It extracts images from PDFs and makes them available to media search. Without an active paid subscription the switch is disabled, with the tooltip **Please upgrade your plan through Billing.**
### The name suggestion chip
The **Suggested** chip derives a name from the website title or address, or from your first file name, and appends **KB**. When a knowledge base with that name exists, the suggestion adds a number.
Select **use this** on the chip to accept it. If you leave the field blank, Tars uses the suggestion, or **Untitled knowledge base** as the fallback.
## After the create
Tars opens the new knowledge base page. Uploaded files parse right away, and a website import runs in the background with live progress. If the knowledge base was created but the import failed to start, an error message tells you to add the source from its page.
## Add more sources later
Open the knowledge base and select **Add more** on the **Documents** tab. The button is hidden while an import runs. The **Add a source** dialog offers the same two tabs without the name field.
The submit button reads **Start fetching** for a website and **Add** for files. If some files fail to upload, they stay listed so you can try again.

## The Knowledge base settings dialog
Select **Edit** from a card's **Actions** menu to open **Knowledge base settings**. It holds the **Name** field, limited to 64 characters, and **Description (optional)**, limited to 500 characters. A counter under each field turns red when you pass the limit. Confirm with **Save changes**.
To remove a description, clear the field and save. You can also rename from the knowledge base page. Hover over the name and select the **Rename** pencil beside it.
## Delete a knowledge base
After 30 days in **Recently deleted**, a knowledge base is removed permanently, together with its documents and embeddings.
Organization admins can select **Delete** from the card menu. The **Delete knowledge base** confirmation explains the 30-day restore window.
If agents still answer from the knowledge base, the dialog names them. You must select the checkbox that confirms those agents stop answering before **Delete knowledge base** activates. See [Attach knowledge to an agent](/docs/guides/knowledge/attach-knowledge-to-an-agent) for the protection rules.
## Restore a deleted knowledge base
**Recently deleted (N)** on the **Knowledge Bases** page opens the **Recently deleted knowledge bases** dialog. Each entry shows its document count and the days left to restore. Select **Restore** to bring the knowledge base back with its documents.

## Verify
Open the **Documents** tab. The status badges clear from the rows once processing finishes. Select a document to read its content in the preview pane.
