# Flow control and branching

> Route conversations down different branches with conditions, edge labels, and AI Agent exit routes.

At the end of this page, your flow routes each conversation down the branch that matches the end user's answer.

## Before you start

Before you start, sign in to <a href={urls.app}>the dashboard</a> and select the organization you want to work in.

* Open an agent in the builder from the **AI Agents** library.
* Know how to draw an edge between two gambits. See [Builder basics](/docs/guides/building/builder-basics).
* Capture at least one value to branch on. See [Use variables](/docs/guides/building/variables).

## Two ways to branch

Some gambit types branch on their own. A Button gambit shows a **Free Input** handle plus one labeled handle per option, unless you turn free text off. A Date & Time gambit splits into **Free Input** and **Date Picker**.

You wire each handle like any other edge, and the edge takes the handle's label. [Gambit mastery](/docs/guides/building/gambits/overview) lists the labels for every input gambit.

For everything else there is **Conditions**, a section in the gambit editor that routes on variable values. Text, Button, Card, Star Rating, Geo Location, Date & Time, Auto Suggestion, No Input, API Call, and Custom Code gambits have it. Media Upload does not. It always branches on its fixed **Text path** and **File path** edges instead.

## Branch on a condition

  <Step title="Open the gambit and turn on Conditions">
    Select the gambit in the builder. The gambit editor opens on the right.

    Turn on the **Conditions** section. It seeds a first branch card named **Branch 1**.

  <Step title="Write the rules for Branch 1">
    Each rule is a variable, a comparison, and a value. Type @ in the variable field to insert a captured variable. The picker also offers this gambit's own value.

    The value field takes a literal, or another @ variable. Select **Add rule** to stack more rules in the same branch.

    A pill between rules reads **and** or **or**. Select it to toggle how the two rules combine.

  <Step title="Pick where the branch jumps">
    Under **Then jump to:**, open the **Select gambit...** dropdown. Pick the gambit this branch should reach.

  <Step title="Add the remaining branches">
    Select **Add Branch** for each extra path. New branches arrive as **Branch 2**, **Branch 3**, and so on.

    <Warning>
      The trash icon on a branch card removes the branch and all of its rules immediately, with no confirmation.

    Branches evaluate top to bottom, and the first match wins. Drag the grip handle on a branch card to reorder them.

  <Step title="Set the default route">
    The **Default (if no branch matches)** dropdown catches everything the branches miss. Leave it on **Continue to next gambit**, or pick a fallback gambit.

  <Step title="Save the gambit">
    Select **Save** in the editor header. One edge per branch appears on the gambit, plus a **Default** edge.

Condition branches are evaluated first. If no branch matches and **Default** names a gambit, the flow jumps there. Option routes run only while **Default** stays on **Continue to next gambit**.

While **Conditions** is on, the gambit shows one handle per branch plus **Default** instead of its option handles. Turning **Conditions** off brings back the option handles and their edges.

### Condition comparisons

| Comparison                                                               | Notes                                              |
| ------------------------------------------------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------- |
| **equals**, **does not equal**                                           | Exact match against the value.                     |
| **contains**, **does not contain**                                       | Substring match.                                   |
| **starts with**, **ends with**                                           | Prefix and suffix match.                           |
| **greater than**, **less than**, **greater or equal**, **less or equal** | Numeric comparison.                                |
| **is empty**, **is not empty**                                           | No value field. The rule checks only the variable. |
| **matches regex**                                                        | The value is a regular expression pattern.         |

## Edge labels beyond input gambits

Flow control, integration, and handoff gambits carry fixed edge labels of their own.

## Rewire or delete an edge

* Drag an end of an existing edge onto a different gambit to rewire it.
* Select an edge to show its delete button, with the tooltip **Delete connection**. Select the button to remove the edge.
* Hold the pointer over an edge to see where it runs, as **#1 - Welcome → #2 - Ask location**.

## Wire AI Agent exit routes

An AI Agent gambit ends its turn through one of its named exit routes. In the gambit editor, the **Exit Routes** card lists the routes as badges, with the first one marked **(default)**.

    Every route card holds a name, such as **Escalate**, and a target gambit dropdown.

    The description below them tells the agent when to take the exit. For example, write **User is frustrated or explicitly asks for a human agent**.

    Select **Add Exit Route** for each extra outcome.

    The gambit shows one handle per route, labeled with the route name. Connect any handle you left without a target gambit.

## Verify

Select **Test** in the toolbar to open **Test Mode**, then select **Run**. Answer so that a specific branch should match, and watch the flow follow it. The **Event Log** has a **Routing** filter chip that isolates the branch decisions. Repeat with answers that target the other branches, including one that falls through to the default.
