# Set up agent email notifications

> Email a fixed list of addresses when one agent gets a new conversation, an assignment, or an achieved goal.

At the end of this page, the recipient list on the **Notifications** section of the Configure page is saved, and you choose which events send mail.

## Before you start

Before you start, sign in to <a href={urls.app}>the dashboard</a> and select the organization you want to work in.

* Open your agent and select **Configure** in the builder sidebar.
* You need a role that can manage agents to change these settings. See [Roles and permissions](/docs/guides/billing/roles-and-permissions).

## Enable notifications

    Select **Notifications** in the **Settings** list on the Configure page. It holds this agent's email settings.

  <Step title="Set the Notification Subject">
    This becomes the subject line of every notification email. Type `{{chatbot_name}}` where you want the agent name. The field shows the placeholder **New conversation on {"{{chatbot_name}}"}**.

    <Warning>
      Always leave a subject in the field. The fallback subject "Notification from" plus the agent name applies only until you first save these settings. After a save with the field empty, the subject line is empty.

  <Step title="Add Recipient Email Addresses">
    Type an address and press Enter to add it. Every listed address receives every enabled notification for this agent. With no addresses listed, no emails send.

    **New Conversation**, **Agent Assignment**, and **Goal achieved** switch on and off separately. All three start on.

## When each email sends

| Event                | Sends when                                                               |
| -------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **New Conversation** | An end user sends their first message in a conversation with this agent. |
| **Agent Assignment** | The conversation is assigned to a human agent.                           |
| **Goal achieved**    | The conversation achieves one of the agent's goals.                      |

No email sends until the end user has sent at least one message in the conversation.

Goals are defined under **Goals & Behavior** in the **Settings** list on the same Configure page. Goal results are reported on the Goals tab. See [Track goals](/docs/guides/analytics/goals).

Every notification email links to its conversation in the dashboard. Each conversation triggers the new conversation and assignment emails at most once. Goal emails send once per goal, so one conversation can trigger several of them.

## Verify

Turn on **New Conversation** and save. Open your agent as an end user and send one message. Every listed address receives one email, and its link opens the conversation in the dashboard.
