# Organization lifecycle

> How an organization is created, handed to another admin, and deleted, and what happens to agents, conversations, and billing during the grace period.

An organization is created once, lives as long as your team needs it, and can be deleted by an admin. Deletion is not instant. The organization goes dark for members and end users at once, billing stops, and the data waits out a plan-based grace period before Tars removes it. This page explains each stage as you see it in the dashboard.

## Creating an organization

Your first organization is created during onboarding, on the **Setup your organization** screen. Later organizations come from **Create workspace** in the organization switcher at the top of the sidebar. A toast confirms the new organization and the dashboard switches into it. [Organizations and members](/docs/get-started/organizations-and-members) describes both screens and the switcher.

<Note>
  The **Create workspace** action only appears when the current organization is on a paid plan. A Free organization can still switch to any other organization you belong to.

Each organization has its own agents, knowledge bases, toolkits, channels, end users, members, and billing. Switching organizations changes all of them at once. Nothing is shared between organizations.

### Data region

Every organization lives in one data region, and its data stays in that region. Tars runs regions in the United States, the European Union, India, and Qatar. An organization that you create from the dashboard is placed in the United States region.

To place a new organization in another region, or to move an existing one, write to <a href={urls.support}>support</a>. The region is not a setting you change in the dashboard.

## Inviting members and handing over control

Members are invited from **Settings** > **Organization**, on the **Members** tab. The Free plan hides the invite button until you upgrade. The complete invite flow, roles, and live-chat seats are covered in [Invite your team](/docs/get-started/invite-your-team).

There is no separate transfer of ownership step. Control of an organization belongs to its admins, and any admin can promote another member. To hand an organization over, open the **Members** tab and change the other person's role to **Admin**. Then, if you no longer need access, leave the organization from the **General** tab.

Make sure at least one other admin exists before you leave, because only an admin can manage members and delete the organization.

## Deleting an organization

Only an admin can delete an organization. On **Settings** > **Organization**, the **General** tab ends with a **Delete organization** action. The confirmation dialog warns that the action is permanent and asks you to confirm before it proceeds.

  Deletion takes effect for everyone at once. Members lose access, deployed agents stop answering end users, and the paid subscription is cancelled. Export anything you need before you confirm.

### What stops immediately

The moment deletion is confirmed, the organization disappears from every member's organization switcher. Members who belong to another organization land there. Members with no other organization see the onboarding screen again.

End users are cut off too. Web widgets, WhatsApp numbers, and API calls that belong to the deleted organization stop being served. Running campaigns and scheduled jobs are stopped rather than allowed to finish.

### Billing settles first

Deleting the organization cancels its paid subscription right away, so nothing renews after the deletion. Download any invoices you still need from the **Billing** page before you delete, because that page is gone with the organization. ## The grace period

Deleting an organization does not purge its data at once. The data waits through a grace period that depends on the plan the organization was on when it was deleted. During the grace period nothing is served and nothing is deleted.

## Restoring a deleted organization

There is no restore option in the dashboard, and Tars does not promise recovery. If an organization was deleted by mistake, ask <a href={urls.support}>support</a> for help before the grace period ends, while the data still exists. After the grace period ends, the data is gone and no one can bring it back.

## What happens at the end of the grace period

When the grace period ends, Tars removes the organization's data in a fixed order. Scheduled jobs, emails, and campaigns go first. Then conversations, live chat history, end user profiles, knowledge bases, toolkits, agents, channels, uploaded files, and analytics go, one group at a time.

After that, SIEM destinations, access grants, identity, and billing records are removed, with the audit evidence and the organization row last. Members' personal accounts are not deleted, only their membership in this organization.

Three kinds of records survive the purge:

* Audit evidence is archived before the organization is removed and kept under the seven-year audit archive described in [Data retention](/docs/guides/security/data-retention).
* Invoice records are kept for legal reasons, with their line descriptions removed.
* Records under a legal hold are not removed. An active hold blocks the teardown until the hold is lifted. See [Erasure and legal holds](/docs/guides/security/erasure-and-legal-holds).
