# Export conversations
> Export an agent's conversations to CSV or JSON from the Export data dialog, then download the file from the Tasks panel.

At the end of this page, you have a CSV or JSON file with one row per conversation and one column per selected field.
## Before you start
Before you start, sign in to the dashboard and select the organization you want to work in.
* Your role must be Admin or Auditor. Other roles do not see the **Export data** button. See [Roles and permissions](/docs/guides/billing/roles-and-permissions).
* Know which environment you want. Live conversations and test conversations export separately.
## Open the Export data dialog
From the agent builder, open **Activity**. The header ends with the **Export data** button. See [Watch conversations](/docs/guides/activity/watch-conversations) for the rest of the header.
The export follows the environment of the selected source. Choosing **Live** exports live conversations, while **Test · Published flow** and every **Draft** entry export test conversations.
The dialog title reads **Export data** followed by the agent name. The subtitle repeats the environment and your timezone.
## Choose the format, date range, and filter
The dialog has its own date range. It starts at the current month, not at the range on the Activity page.
The format toggle sits at the top right of the dialog. CSV is selected by default.
Use the date range control under the title. Only conversations started inside the range are exported.
The filter select offers **All conversations**, **Completed**, and **Incomplete**.
The right side of the same row reads, for example, **1,240 conversations match**. This count is what the export contains.
## Select columns
The **Columns** list on the left groups fields by namespace. Every column is selected when the dialog opens.
* The **meta** group holds conversation fields such as **Started on**, **Status**, **Channel**, **Duration (minutes)**, **Escalated**, and **CSAT**.
* The **response** group holds one column per gambit that stores a variable, labeled with the gambit name.
* The **agent**, **api**, and **post** groups hold AI agent replies, API call results, and post-API results per gambit.
* The **enduser**, **utm**, **system**, **flow**, **url**, and **trigger** groups hold end user, campaign, and page data.
Select the group name to expand it. The counter next to the name reads, for example, **meta · 5/8**. The group checkbox selects or clears the whole group.
One button toggles the whole list. It reads **Select all**, or **Clear all** once every column is ticked.
Type in **Search columns…** to filter by column name or gambit name. When nothing matches, the list reads **No columns match**.
The right pane, **Sample preview · latest 5 conversations only**, renders your selection in the chosen format. It reads **Select at least one column** until you tick one column.
Hold the pointer over **Duration (minutes)** to see its hint. It measures time from conversation start to last activity.
Columns that are empty for every exported conversation are left out of the finished file. Selecting a column does not guarantee that it appears when no conversation captured a value.
## Generate the export
An export is capped at 100,000 conversations. Above the cap, **Generate export** fails with a message that asks you to narrow the date range, and nothing is exported.
The button repeats the count and format, for example **Generate export (1,240 · CSV)**. It reads **Starting…** while the export starts.
The dialog closes. A toast confirms that the export started and that a download follows when it is ready.
If the export cannot start for another reason, a toast reads **Could not start the export**. Check your connection and try again.
## Download from the Tasks panel
The export runs in the background, so you can keep working. Progress shows in the tasks tracker at the bottom of the main sidebar, next to your profile menu. A spinner and a running count appear while an export is active.
* Open the tracker to see the **Tasks** panel. A running export shows a progress bar and a count such as **640/1,240**, then **Finishing…**.
* When the export finishes, a toast reads **Conversation export ready**. If the dashboard tab is visible at that moment, the file downloads on its own.
* The finished row keeps a **Download** button, so you can save the file again later. The file is named **Conversation export.csv** or **Conversation export.json**.
* A failed export shows its reason in red under the title. Select **Dismiss** on one row, or **Clear** to remove every finished task.
The panel lists every background job, not only exports, so a segment count or another long task can appear beside your export.
Each **Download** creates a short-lived signed link. If the link times out before the file saves, a toast reads **Download link expired**. Select **Download** again to get a fresh link.
## Export a single transcript
To send or download one conversation as a transcript instead of a data file, use the **Conversations** page. Open the conversation, select **More actions**, then **Send transcript**. See [Share a transcript](/docs/guides/live-chat/agent-workspace#share-a-transcript).
## Verify
Open the **Tasks** panel and select **Download** on the finished **Conversation export** row. The file contains one row per matched conversation and one column per selected field that holds data.
